about

In 1964 four 24 year old musicians, John Pochee drums, Bernie McGann saxophone, Dave MacRae piano and marimba and Andy Brown bass, all with a desire to play bebop and enthusiastic contemporary jazz, moved from Sydney to Melbourne and took up a four night a week residency at the "Fat Black Pussycat" under the title "The Heads", indeed a brave move in 1964. Some nights the audience was wildly enthusiastic and other nights the club was...deserted. No alcohol sold at this time making attracting customers even more difficult. A drummer friend, Brian Jones, would sometimes bring his old tape recorder and a couple of microphones and try to catch the energy and vibe. These tracks are taken from those tapes. The sound quality is not great but the enthusiasm, obvious. We hope you enjoy the party from 56 years ago and if you feel like making a financial contribution we thank you otherwise all free.
